Lest We Forget

Closed eyes

Forever asleep

A surround-sound of thunder

As clouds above weep

A sudden flash,

Like fireworks in the sky,

Celebrate rebirth

Whilst the moon, behind clouds, lie

Muffled voices above

And quaking footsteps in the dark

Send tremors deep

Straight into your heart

Imagine the faces

And breathe their scent deep

They won’t be back…

For a couple of weeks.

Sounds become less

As the years go on

Just you and your memory

Now that you’re ‘gone’

Send whispers in the night

Remind them you’re there

The smell of rotting flowers,

Permeating the air

Dream on

And send yourself away

For this is your resting place

And here you will stay
