The Nail Biter

Silver birch bark, exorticate
Onychophagia devastate
Lacerating skin by the layer
Shedding leaves, like tissue paper

Antique parchment, decorticate

Contorted branches premeditate
A valley of blood through cavernous roots
Betrayal of a body in disrepute

Shredded nails, a neurotic symptom
Of the deciduous tree’s fresh new victim
Perpetual nerves and cruel anxiety
Beauty ravaged by mortal insanity
Inward hostility bottled within
Rugged renewal, purification of sin
Cannibalism upon ragged mountain tops
Obsessive catharsis too addictive to stop
